Earlier this month, fans of @bbcdoctorwho — Whovians, as they call themselves — were heard hooting and applauding at a noise level befitting a boxing match in the theater of the Slipper Room on New York’s Lower East Side. The attraction? Nerdlesque, a geeky offshoot of #burlesque that grew out of the art form’s 1990s renaissance. Until 1942, burlesque in NYC was defined by glamorous women performing strip teases. That’s when the last burlesque house shut down. But in the late ’90s, burlesque came back as an outlet for self-expression and social commentary. Rather than luring crowds through feminine beauty and glamour, #nerdlesque lets crowds revel in their nerdoms among like-minded people. (Forget fan fiction.) @dollyfaibyshev captured the dancer Brief Sweat performing as Cyberman during Hotsy Totsy Burlesque, which hosted the tribute to @bbcdoctorwho. “Life is hard, and work is tedious,” one nerdlesque performer told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ the same night. “Fans watch a funny strip tease with their favorite characters, they laugh, they drink. They feel better at the end of it. If that is the only thing I can contribute to the world, that’s fine.” Visit the link in our profile to read more.
