Dr. Gregory Berns knows what your dog is thinking. The neuroscientist scans the brains of #dogs for glimpses at their inner lives. One conclusion: #? does love you — and not for your food. Gregory, who works at @emoryuniversity, had watched MRI studies help researchers understand which parts of the human brain were involved in emotional processes. Maybe, he thought, MRI testing could teach us similar things about dogs. The big problem: Getting dogs into an MRI — and making them hold still. Gregory worked with Mark Spivak, a dog trainer, and ultimately spent 3 months training his own dog, Callie. Since 2012, his team has scanned about 90 dogs. “As a matter of principle, we never restrained or drugged any,” he added. “If a dog wants to get up from the MRI and leave, they can. There’s no compulsion.” The big question most dog lovers probably have: How can you possibly test for whether dogs love their humans more than they love food? You'll have to visit the link in our profile to get that answer. @dustchambers photographed this Australian shepherd, waiting to have his brain scanned. (His head is wrapped with medical gauze to hold ear-plugs that muffle the noise.)
