#SpeakingInDance | “It was a big break making ‘The Fugue,’” said the choreographer @twylatharp. She created it on a farm, “outside the art world — outside the milieu of dancing. We were doing barre on the wooden porch. You rethink: It’s like, Oh, OK, what is dance again?” Choreographed in 1970, “The Fugue” is a classic: On an amplified stage, 3 dancers perform 20 variations of a movement phrase in a multitude of directions and facings. Here, @tankerbell, @kaitlyn__gilliland and @karachan3, who will dance in Twyla’s season at @thejoycetheater starting September 19, perform the 15th variation. “They have to really gauge one another’s timing,” Twyla told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “These old pieces were really community pieces. When this was made, we’d been working together for 5 years.” That “we” includes herself, as well as Rose Marie Wright and #SaraRudner, who, Twyla said: “knew the direction of each other’s blood flow and could basically always find each other.
