Lioness and cub – This is an image that I captured at dawn one morning during a recent trip to the Masai Mara in Kenya. I was leading two back to back photo tours for @tatraphotography and as is always the case with wildlife photography the opportunities that we were lucky to experience can often come down to luck and during the two weeks I feel like we definitely got lucky. The Mara itself is an extraordinary place to visit, a wildlife spectacle that feels like an assault on the senses as the vast grasslands teem with over 5 million land mammals. Our trip was timed to coincide with the great wildebeest migration but I always try to find where the best images lie so at dawn and dusk we’d often tend to concentrate our efforts on a 21 strong pride of lions. Headed up by a coalition of three adult males, all brothers, this formidable pride also contained five lionesses and 13 cubs of three different ages ranging from 3, 5 and 9 months old. Witnessing their frequent interactions, their playful nature and the strength of their bonds reminded me that the families of all species share the same love and affection for one another, the same shared quest for food, shelter, and water and, to my mind at least, the same right to live their lives in peace. On this occasion 18 members of the pride crested a ridge and then settled down to play right in front of where we’d positioned our vehicle. In the dawn light I used my 600mm lens to try and focus through the tall grasses, picking out moments of tenderness such as this, shared between an adult lioness and a 9 month old cub.
