Painted in incredible detail and placed against a gold ground like a Byzantine saint, every man represented in The Jerome Project shares the first name of #TitusKaphar’s father, Jerome. This is not the only thing they have in common with the artist’s father: they have all spent time in prison and are all African American men, a demographic drastically overrepresented in the United States’ prison system. Each portrait is dipped in tar to a level that approximates the percentage of his life that the subject spent in prison. The tar is a metaphor not just for the time lost, but also the unerasable mark that a conviction and prison time leaves on the individual. Explore the legacy of lynching through artists like Kaphar @ブルックリン美術館 through October 8.⠀
