The Marquis de Lafayette, born on this day in 1757, was touring the U.S. in the 1820s when he came face to face with himself on a glove.
The outpouring of public affection for the Revolutionary hero left a trail of commemorative silk ribbons, ceramics, household wares and even gloves stamped with his likeness.
When a lady presented her hand to be kissed, Lafayette was stunned to see his own image there. In one instance, he is said to have “murmur[ed] a few graceful words to the effect that he did not care to kiss himself, he [then] made a very low bow, and the lady passed on.” It’s one of many of the nation's souvenirs that have made their way to our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館.
