Photo by @FransLanting The spiny desert of southern Madagascar is a world unto itself. Ninety-five percent of its plants are found nowhere else—not even elsewhere in Madagascar. A waxy coating on its leaves helps this aloe minimize moisture loss. I kneeled down to silhouette it against a sunset sky reddened by dust from a volcanic eruption in the Philippines, 5,000 miles away.
