Once plentiful off the southern U.S. coast-- and in waters near the Caribbean, Brazil, Senegal, and Congo-- the Atlantic goliath grouper can grow up to 800 pounds and more than 8 feet in length. Found in shallow waters, these ambush predators consume crustaceans, fish, and even young sea turtles by sucking smaller prey in and swallowing it whole. Goliath groupers are generally solitary, but several times a year they convene in groups of roughly 100 for what are known as spawning aggregations. The fish are also territorial-- when their space is encroached upon, they can contract muscles in their swim bladder to create a loud rumbling heard at great distances. Overfishing has caused Atlantic grouper populations to dwindle in recent decades, but conservation efforts have allowed the fish to rebound in certain areas.
