This prime parking space in Manhattan is reserved for people, not cars. Repurposed parking spots, like this one, are the latest effort to carve out more open space on New York City’s crowded streets and sidewalks. Called “street seats,” these blink-and-miss-them bits of greenery are tiny and temporary, returning to parking spots come winter. This summer, there are 18 pop-up street seats in New York City, double the number from 2015. This one, which @damonwinter photographed on Duane Street in TriBeCa, attracts moms and tots in strollers. Another one, in Brownsville, Brooklyn, has become a popular place to dine outside. “Their charm is that they are not a lot of work, and not particularly big, but they really enhance the street,” said Polly Trottenberg, the @nyc_dot commissioner. “It’s a relatively nimble way to reclaim public space.”
