How do you use storytelling to explore the repercussions of a business dependent upon the sale of the flesh without slipping into preachy puritanism or flat-out pornography? That was a challenge for the creators of “The Deuce,” an @hbo series about the sex industry that once defined 42nd Street. The Times Square of today may be a Disney dystopia. “But the fashionable yearning for the seamier Times Square of yore is to wish for the return of live sex shows, peep-show stalls in constant need of cleaning, men beating women on the street, rampant drug use and underage prostitution,” writes our reporter @danbarry1958. The show’s co-creators — David Simon and George Pelecanos — recognized that among the many pitfalls to avoid was any lapse into what David called “the boys’ version of the sex industry.” So the show’s writers, directors and actors engaged in intense, scene-by-scene discussions. Gay and trans writers contributed to the teleplays, women directed 4 of the episodes, and @マギー・ジレンホール shared her notes on scripts and edits. While her character, Candy, is central to the show, “the most consequential character may be the city itself,” @danbarry1958 writes. @cgbp took this portrait of #MaggieGyllenhaal with @ラリー・ギリアード・Jr, who plays a police officer on the show.
