“Temporary Storage: The Belongings of Juan Manuel Montes” 2009/2017
By Camilo Ontiveros
For Temporary Storage (2009), Camilo Ontiveros gathered up his belongings—a mattress, a bicycle, suitcases, clothes and other household items —and bundled them with ropes and plastic, evoking the domestic cargo often seen in the beds of pickup trucks in Mexico.
The 2017 installation uses the belongings of Juan Manuel Montes, who was granted protected status by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program created by President Obama, but was recently deported by the new administration. The precariousness of these objects balanced atop the sawhorses speaks to the instability of the lives of immigrants, for whom home is a moving target or temporary condition.
