Who is at fault. Small town USA, right winged white nationalists, people killed. What is your reaction when you hear these words? We're all quick to jump to blame the Nazis, Trump and the ignorant others. Trump says the blame lies on many sides. I don't know what he means by this, his vagueness often comes off as cowardly to me, but if by many sides he includes himself, then I applaud him for having the courage to admit and take responsibility. Obama quoted Nelson Mandela today saying "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion…" I've never asked a newborn how they felt about it, but the schoolyard bullying and shaming I experienced makes me think that we are born with an innate sense of fear toward things that are different. I accept that and I think it's ok because I and many people like myself have learned to overcome those fears and embrace things that are different. That's how we survived centuries. It's so easy to blame, it's placing the burden on someone else and asking them to change. I don't expect to wake up tomorrow hoping for cowards to find courage, Trump to admit mistakes or racists to love me just because I whined about it. But I can choose to try and see things from their point of view, understand them and love them for their difference and find the things we have in common. Show them that by taking responsibility and taking action we can end this cycle of blame to love and live on. One headline read: CHARLOTTESVILLE VICTIM IDENTIFIED: MOTHER SAYS “SHE DIED DOING WHAT WAS RIGHT”. Now that is taking responsibility. Much love and will miss you in this world. Heather D Meyer. Much love to your family.
