Asians love to goto the movies! But a quick google search will tell you that only about 4% of speaking roles in Hollywood goto Asians and a lonely 1% are lead roles. Funny thing, because my friend and family talk incessantly and yes, we speak English. So why does it seem we're still stuck in the era of silent films? The serpent has 3 heads. Economy, ecology and ME. The economics of being Asian. Supply and demand. When there's a lot of something, it costs less if no one values it and naturally it's hard to find value in something that looks the same as the thing right next to it. It's why pebbles go unnoticed. There are a lot of Asians everywhere and no one could care less about us because to many we all look the same, eat the same things and make the same weird noises. Being labeled wholesale as, slants, chinks, or even better sounding adjectives like inscrutable, exotic, really aren't much better. Worst of all, we buy into our own stereotypes, believing that we are just one in a billion. The truth is, you are. You are ONE in a billion, a rarity to behold, as long as you can be the diamond that realizes that it is different than the other pebbles. What we share are the same hard problems but we can each have unique ways to solve them because that's what makes you special. You are the solution. Your idiocy, idiosyncrasy, cleverness, coolness, your everything. You have to believe it and make others take notice and believe it too. How? Ecology of Being Asian...next
