In a section of her coffin, a god addresses the Lady Bensuipet using a male pronoun. Her skin is painted red—the color normally assigned to a man. Written and visual language was so powerful in ancient Egypt that these ere enough to temporarily transform Bensuipet into a man, a necessary step towards reproducing herself to be reborn into the afterlife. Inside the coffin ⇨ the yellow cartonnage mask alters her gender role once again so that she may live forever in the next world as a woman. Come see Bensuipet’s coffin and learn more about gender transformation in ancient Egypt in #awomansafterlife
