Photo by @jeffmauritzen / Words by Justin Kavanagh. // The Giant’s Causeway at sunset, a spectacle that melts time and leaves you speechless with wonder at how this strange formation of mainly hexagonal stones came to be.
If you enjoy a good yarn, you’ll believe the legend that the Causeway was formed when the Celtic warrior Fionn mac Cumhaill flung great swathes of the Antrim coast into the sea, creating a path over which to go across the sea and confront his great foe, the Scottish giant Benandonner.
If you’re more scientific, you’ll believe that the Causeway resulted from volcanic flows cooling into 40,000-odd basalt columns some 60-million years ago. Whatever your beliefs, here’s a tip we both agree on: get there after 7 p.m. and you’ll have a UNESCO world heritage site practically to yourself. For more adventures from Ireland follow @jeffmauritzen and Justin Kavanagh on the road as we travel around the Emerald Island, as we update the 5th Edition of the #NatGeoTraveler: Ireland guidebook.
