Today is our birthday! ?This 1860s photo of our first building—the Castle—is in the collection of our newest museum, @nmaahc.
The Smithsonian was officially created on August 10, 1846, and the Smithsonian Institution Building (aka the Castle) originally housed all of our operations, including chemical labs and living space for the Secretary and his family.
Now the Castle is our visitor center and also holds office space (like social media headquarters ?). Oh, and the crypt of James Smithson, our founding donor. #tbt
