It's time for World Record Wednesday! The official Guinness record holder for world's "Largest Mouth," by species, is the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus). Their gargantuan mouths can measure up to 16 ft (4.9 m) long, and 12 ft (3.7 m) high—with a 1-ton (900 kg) tongue to boot. Found primarily in the Arctic, these whales feed by using their unique baleen—fringes of keratin hanging from the roof of their mouths, instead of teeth. The baleen serves to trap plankton at high volume as the bowhead powers through the water, mouth agape. In the process, these whales can feast on some 2 tons of plankton each day.
