When found in a bog in Newburgh, New York, the Warren mastodon was still in the position in which it had died some 11,000 years ago: standing upright with its legs thrust forward and its head tilted upward, apparently gasping for air. The fossil was discovered in 1845 by a crew digging for peat fuel. Every bone in this mastodon skeleton is real. It was one of the first major fossil finds in the United States and is still one of the most complete mastodon skeletons known.
