I can't sleep. I've been putting off writing this, in the hopes that I would simply wake up from a very bad dream. But, unfortunately, it is very real. We had to put our dear little Rascal to rest on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 due to complications from Cushings Disease. My heart is breaking. For those of you who don't have children (or for even those who do) and "humanize" your furry loved ones, I'm sure you can understand how I feel. I adopted Rascal when he was 10 and was blessed to have enjoyed another 6 1/2 years with him. If anyone ever tries to deter you from adopting an older dog, don't be swayed. It's an enriching experience beyond words. I remember when I was initially interested in meeting him (saw him online) and spoke to his foster parent at the time. She said, "If you're looking for a lap dog, he's not it. He's rather aloof." I was thinking, "Why the hell would you want to deter me from adopting him?" and stayed the course. She eventually brought him by my apartment in NoHo. After prancing about my place for about five minutes, checking out every room--deciding whether or not he wanted to stay--I sat on the floor of my living room and patted the side of my thigh for him to come. He scurried over, burying his face into my thigh and turned over on his back revealing his belly for me to rub. The foster said resentfully, "I don't believe it, he's never done that to me!" I said, "Well, he's home." And he was. Ned and I have a habit of creating Native American names for everyone in our "pack"...I'm Sweet Music, Ned is Warm Heart, Ben (our other doggie) is Crossing Paws. Well, Rascal was and will always be Little Big Man, a fitting name for such a big Spirit locked in a 10lb body. His Spirit filled the room. And I must admit, now that he's gone, the house is barren--silent and lonesome. Ben is missing his buddy; they were like peas and carrots. We were privileged to have been able to say goodbye in the sanctuary of our own home. I was holding him, looking into his eyes as he took his final breath. What an honor! I will miss you, Little Big Man. You captured my heart 6 1/2 years ago, loved me, guarded me, & guided me to Ned. You're my angel. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤
