“A lot of patience and planning goes into Asian elephant husbandry training. Keepers Debbie Flinkman and Kayleigh Sullivan have made remarkable progress in working with our youngest female, Maharani. Blood is an important tool we can use to analyze an elephant’s health and hormones, so Debbie and Kayleigh practice positive reinforcement blood draw training with Maharani daily to ensure her comfort with this procedure. They have also acclimated her to the medical examination area of the elephant barn and prepared her for ultrasounds. Maharani is of reproductive age and could possibly breed in the future. Should she become pregnant, knowing these behaviors will help us manage her through pregnancy and birth. Each of these achievements is significant, but all three together show the remarkable progress our keepers have made.
