Ce grand peintre français se fit spécialiste des portraits sur les conseils de Charles Le Brun, premier peintre du roi Louis XIV. En 1701, il suivit les traces de Le Brun avec son propre portrait du roi où chaque détail se fait l’image du pouvoir absolu. Initialement commandé pour être offert au roi d’Espagne, Philippe V, ce portrait plut tant à la cour qu’il resta en France.

This great French painter devoted himself to portraiture under the advice of Charles Le Brun, the first artist to paint King Louis XIV’s portrait. In 1701, he followed in Le Brun’s footsteps with his very own portrait of the king, in which every detail contributes to a quintessential image of absolute power. Initially commissioned as a gift for King Philip V of Spain, this portrait proved so popular with the court that it stayed in France.
