ニューイングランドは圧倒的に白人が多い。自分が (日本人という以上に）アジア人だと意識する。「日本に行ったことがあるよ」という人々が、嬉しそうにそれぞれの日本の印象、思い出を話してくれる。そんな中で極めて特別だったのが、ニューハンプシャーの小さな町のファーマーズマーケットで聞いた写真家フレッチャー・マンリー氏の冒険談。1972年札幌オリンピックの公式カメラマンとして招待された時に知り会ったアイヌのチーフとのサンフランシスコでの再会の話。最高。彼のストーリーをリポストします。60年近くに渡り世界中を旅してドキュメントしてきたフレッチャー氏の写真、旅人の心をくすぐりまくります。すごくいい。しかしアイヌのチーフの格好良さにもほどがある。

I always enjoy to hear when people share with me unique stories of their experiences in Japan. Through those hilarious lost in translation classics, I have rediscovered the peculiarities of my country. Sometimes I meet incredible stories like this. Photographer Mr. Fletcher Manley shared his special memory of Ainu Chief in 1972. I'd like to share his resurrection with you. I'm sure he has many more amazing stories like this from all over the world. His rich photo documentation through decades stimulate the heart of vagabonds like me !

The Ainu Chief and me, San Francisco 1972...we met when I visited his village in Hokkaido, Japan a month or so earlier. He was in his full dress ceremonial attire. We met up again for lunch at his hotel on California St. when he visited the US as a guest of the City of Oakland. I am not sure what the dining room patrons thought of us after I stood up and introduced him (per proper Japanese custom) as a famous Ainu Chief. Being in CA at that time, the audience was rather nonplused.
