Kyushu azaleas (Rhododendron kiusianum) cover Mount Hijidake on the Kuju Mountain Range in Aso-Kuju National Park.
Kyushu azaleas can be seen all over the volcanic regions of Japan’s southernmost main island. They dominate ecosystems that have been recently disturbed by volcanic activity, but begin to die off when grasslands experience forestation after the volcanic activity ends.
Called ‘miyama kirishima’ in Japanese, their name comes from a botanist who visited the Kirishima region of southern Kyushu in 1909 and noted the azaleas blooming deep in the mountains (‘miyama’ means ‘mountain recess’ or, more literally, ‘deep in the mountains’).
