#Artwords: ‘Divisionism’ is a late nineteenth century painting technique that involved using tiny adjacent dabs of primary colour to create the effect of light.

The technique was inspired by optical theory and associated with neo-impressionists, who attempted to put impressionist painting of light and colour on a scientific basis.

It developed at the same time as a similar process known as pointillism, however pointilism refers specifically to the application of painted dots, whereas divisionism refers to the scientific theory behind the optical effect of separating colours.
