A view of Manarola, one of 5 villages that make up Cinque Terre, the gravity-defying cluster of homes that cling to the cliffs of Italy’s northwestern coast. #CinqueTerre is famous for its vistas. But it’s the terraces hugging the slopes high above the blue waters that have always allowed the land to be cultivated, with vineyards and apple and lemon groves. Now, a 32-year-old has become the pillar of a local battle to restore and preserve the old and essential but dying art of terracing. The dry stone walls she’s teaching young people to build do more than form the #picturesque landscape; the different-size plots prevent this improbable place from sliding into the sea. Italy is thought to have the most terraced land in Europe, with more than 100,000 miles of dry stone walls — 20 times the length of the Great Wall of China. But since the 1960s, many of the farmers who once worked the land have moved to cities. The ancient walls have been largely abandoned, too.
