It's #TrilobiteTuesday! The Ordovician-age Walcott/Rust quarry of Upstate New York owes its name to two of American paleontology's most renowned figures; Charles Walcott, who later on would play a vital role in the discovery of British Columbia's Burgess Shale, and William Rust, who spent decades of his life uncovering this locale's expansive fauna. At least 18 species of trilobites have been uncovered within the finely grained limestone deposits that comprise the sedimentary layers of this picturesque site, including massive plates of Ceraurus pleuexanthemus and Flexicalymene senaria, along with football-shaped examples of Isotelus gigas, such as the one in this photo. Thought to have been lost to science at the tail-end of the 19th Century, a late 20th Century rediscovery sparked a renewed interest in both this legendary site, and its equally renowned trilobite material. #trilobite #amnh #fossils #extinct #prehistoric #paleontology #walcott #burgessshale #ordovician #ancient #arthopods #amnh
