Today we’re celebrating #GayPrideMonth by featuring the controversial and acclaimed gay photographer #RobertMapplethorpe.
#Mapplethorpe made a name for himself with highly stylized black and white photography of subjects including floral still lifes, portraits of celebrities, and male and female nudes. His work surrounding the late 1960s/early 1970s underground BDSM scene in New York City was featured in his retrospective exhibition “Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Moment,” which opened at Philadelphia’s Institute of Contemporary Arts in December 1988. The homoeroticism imbedded in this show sparked a nationwide debate on censorship and whether tax dollars should fund the arts—a debate that is still going on today.
