This is a portrait of a Sioux Indian man by Gertrude Käsebier, who was born on today's date in 1852. We do not know his name.
When the photographer saw the grand parade of Buffalo Bill's Wild West troupe en route to Madison Square Garden, she was inspired to seek permission to photograph members of the group in her studio. Käsebier had spent her childhood on the Great Plains, and retained many vivid, happy memories of playing with nearby American Indian children. Eventually, she photographed American Indian men, women, and children, both formally and informally. Friendships developed, and this photography project continued for more than a decade.
This photograph is part of our Photographic History Collection.
