Founding collector Katherine S. Dreier (1877–1952) first joined the modern art world as a painter. Dreier exhibited at the watershed 1913 Armory show in New York, where her long acquaintance with Marcel #Duchamp began after she saw his "Nude Descending a Staircase" (1912). On her death in 1952, Duchamp arranged for Dreier to leave a bequest to the Guggenheim Museum, and a number of works are now on view in "Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim."
