The Basilica of St Simeon in Syria, northwest of Aleppo, was home to the Christian ascetic known in 5th century Europe as Simeon Stylites. When the Basilica was finished in 491AD it stood as the largest in the world. The pillar in the centre of frame, here photographed in 2009, is where St. Simeon is said to have spent 47 years in prayer. A tourist attraction for centuries, the site came under the control of various factions in this cruel and devastating civil war. This time last year (May 2016) the site was seriously damaged in a Russian air strike, less than 5 years after being designated @UNESCO World Heritage status. The current condition of the site is unknown.
