Photo by @andywcoleman // South Georgia is now known for its wildlife, but it was once central to the story of one of the most epic journeys of all time. In 1916, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Tom Crean and Frank Worsley, three adventurers from the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, trekked over the glaciated mountains of this island after an 800 mile voyage across the Southern Ocean in a lifeboat. Their ship, the Endurance, was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea and the remaining crew were stuck on Elephant Island with a long, dark winter ahead of them. Three months after the first successful overland crossing of the South Georgia, Shackleton was finally able to rescue the remaining crew members. We were blessed to hike in the footsteps of these explorers. It’s a little easier when survival is not the main goal. Taken during an Expedition aboard the National Geographic Explorer. @NatGeoExpeditions #NatGeoStaff
