Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets are rebounding through Smithsonian science.
The recovery of the species started with just 18 animals, whose offspring came to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 1988. Since then, 726 black-footed ferrets have been born there, and several hundred of those have been reintroduced to the wild.
It’s one of many conservation success stories that will be shared at our #EarthOptimism Summit, held over Earth Day weekend. We’re convening scientists, thought leaders, philanthropists, conservationists and civic leaders to highlight what’s working in conservation. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter with #EarthOptimism.
