It's time for #TrilobiteTuesday! Since trilobites occupied such a wide variety of marine habitats during their lengthy passage through time— ranging from shallow tropical reefs to frigid polar depths—their available food resources naturally changed within each of those environments. It is currently believed that some trilobites were filter feeders, feasting upon free-floating swarms of proto-plankton, while others may have used their hypostome, mouth plate, to scrape parasites off of undersea rock surfaces. Others may have survived as scavengers, feeding off of the remains of primitive worms or whatever else may have fallen into their deep-ocean lairs. The majority of trilobites were most likely predators, with some perhaps even being cannibalistic, feeding upon smaller trilobite species. Especially early in their history, it appears that larger genus such as Glossopleura and Olenoides, pictured here, preyed upon weaker trilo-types.
