Photo by @chamiltonjames / Charlie Hamilton James - Meet Bran. Bran is a raven who lives in south west England. Like all ravens he is very smart. Ravens are corvids (the crow family) and like their cousins - magpies, jackdaws, jays, rooks and many others they are clever. In fact ravens are some of the cleverest creatures on the planet. They are very effective problem solvers and basic tool users. In this image Bran is sitting on an old well stone. It has a hole in it and Bran likes to play a game with his best friend Lloyd. Lloyd will get a tasty morsel of food, tie it to a string and throw it down the well. What Bran has figured out is that he can retrieve the morsel of food by lifting the string with his beak - he also knows that he has to grip the string with his feet each time he pulls it to stop the slack falling back down the well. It might sound simple to us but in the animal world that level of problem solving means Bran and his kin can sit alongside dolphins and primates as being very clever - certainly far cleverer than the cows that like to watch him.
