This turtle has a very strong beak and claws which it uses to assist it in climbing over obstacles in and around rivers and streams. Big-headed turtles are unable to pull their disproportionately large heads into their shells, so they don’t hesitate to defend themselves using their sharp beaks and powerful jaws. This species’ head is covered with a protective, bony 'roof' and its skull is made entirely of bone.
