Joan Didion took a monthlong road trip in the summer of 1970 through California and the South, thinking it might turn out to be “a piece.” She didn’t write it. Now her drafts and notes from the trip have been turned into a book. The "evocative, elliptical narrative of rejected details and paths not taken shed light on the often impossible-to-articulate act of writing, and show us Didion the writer in pursuit of her story," Rebecca Bengal writes.
