#WomensHistoryMonth ? this is Jovita Idár ? born in 1885, she was a radical Mexican journalist and activist who wrote about the racism Mexican-Americans faced (including the rejection of the Spanish language, the lynchings of Hispanics, and the white washing of Mexican culture) ?she was an active member of the First Mexican Congress, where many women were able to engage in political meetings for the first time ? the success of this led Jovita to organize La Liga Feminil Mexicanista (Mexican Feminist League), which worked to create free bilingual literacy classes for Mexican workers, bilingual public school systems, and fully supplied elementary schools (schools with Mexican students were harshly neglected) ?this organization recruited poor, migrant women for positions on their advisory board, in spite of disapproval and pressure from their male funders to limit La Liga membership to only middle class women ? in response, they severed ties to these funders and held art performances to fund their work ?? La Liga collected food and clothing for refugees after the Battle of Nuevo Laredo, and spread the word about the U.S. government's role in attempting to contain the Mexican Revolution ? she never stopped fighting: volunteering as an interpreter at hospitals, founding the first Democratic political action group for Mexican Americans in Texas, speaking out for the worldwide banding-together of immigrant communities during WWII, etc. ✅?? now you know her name ??✅ #JOVITAIDAR #?? ?? ??
