@staletwizzlers wasn’t planning to visit Death Valley National Park (@deathvalleynps) on a recent visit to California. @nytimestravel’s “Frugal Traveler” had intended to drive Highway 1 from LA to Big Sur. But falling rocks and mudslides had made parts of the classic coastal road impassable. So, wanting to spend a few days on the road exploring the vastness of California’s southern half without spending much money, he came up with a solution: “I pieced it together over the course of 3 days and was able to check out, among other things, one of the nation’s most obscure and unexpected opera houses, a bizarre, deserted seaside resort town, and, of course, Death Valley, the lowest, driest and hottest place in the country,” he writes. @deathvalleynps, which was photographed here by @bethcoller, offers deep silence and colorful canyons. Visit the link in our profile to read more and to see more photos of the salt flats and kitsch that defined @staletwizzlers’s trip.
