For months, the actor @bobby_cannavale has asked the people in his life: What does belonging mean to them, and where do they feel they belong? He’s been trying to put his finger on what a person loses when his or her sense of belonging disappears — a key, he thinks, to unlocking his next role: Yank, the disillusioned laborer at the center of Eugene O’Neill’s 1922 play “The Hairy Ape,” which begins a limited run on March 25 at the @parkavearmory. Yank is a tough guy among tough guys, and on the ocean liner where he feeds the furnace, he has a proud and romantic vision of his importance. But when a wealthy young passenger comes across him and faints, Yank recognizes her horror. “Oh, the filthy beast!” she says. “When you lose something, what do you do?” @bobby_cannavale asked. “You do everything you can to try to reclaim it.” The 46-year-old actor, who recently starred in @vinyl, specializes in handsome, unpolished types. This is his first O’Neill play, but the dense, phonetically written dialogue — packed with words like “youse” and “skoit” (skirt, that is: a woman) — feels natural. “It reads to me very much like music,” he said. “It’s quite gorgeous, I think.” @scottymacphoto photographed @bobby_cannavale in Miami.
