“It’s a very out-of-body experience,” said the @nycballet soloist @bpollack on dancing “Moves” by Jerome Robbins. “It’s something about being in a room with 2,500 people, and it’s just silent.” There's no music in this austere 1959 ballet, which requires its cast to be grounded and calm. “You’re acutely aware of how fast your heart is beating,” said @bpollack's partner, @camerondieck, “and the noises that everyone else makes that you use as your cues.” (The noisier the pointe shoes the better.) There's a tender spot in their tense exchange, known as the angry pas de deux. After @bpollack thumps her heel several times, @camerondieck places his hand on her shoulder. Her body softens. Then comes a daring move: @bpollack, balanced on one foot, dips into a deep penché, or a lean forward, and swivels upright. “It’s this beautiful thing of how you could be really upset with your partner, but still trust each other,” @camerondieck told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “I love you, but I’m mad at you right now.” @jaibirdn took this #video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly exploration of dance.
