Today, February 20th, is the 90th birthday of pioneering actor Sidney Poitier. As elegant and quietly commanding a personality as ever graced motion pictures, Poitier came to the fore of American culture in the 50s and 60s as a actor, and as an ambassador of the civil rights movement. While other actors and actresses of color made impact before and after him, Poitier in his time, leveraged his screen presence into a culture-changing force.⠀
In 1958, his film, "The Defiant Ones", gave Poitier his first Academy Award nomination as Best Actor. Five years later, he won the Oscar for "Lilies of the Field" (1963), the first African-American to win for a leading role. His roles in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967) and "To Sir, with Love" (1967) were for their time, landmarks in the breaking down of social barriers, and Poitier's talent, conscience, integrity, and inherent likability placed him on equal footing with the white stars of the day. He took on directing and producing chores in the 70s, achieving success in both arenas. ⠀
He penned The Measure of a Man, which was billed as a spiritual autobiography and published in 2000. That same year, Poitier picked up a Grammy Award for best spoken word album for the audio version of the book.⠀
