photo by @andrea_frazzetta // The Danakil can be considered a sort of a ghost ocean. It is from the retreat of the sea, evaporated twenty thousand years ago, that the Danakil has gained its peculiarity: it is a spread of evaporitic rocks that gives rise to the Great Plain of Salt - a desert which stretches for about 6 hundred kilometers. Here a portrait of Berhe Micheal, age 24.
The Danakil is the home of the Afar people.
These nomads, who are mainly devoted to the extraction of minerals, live in one of the most inhospitable, and one of the hottest, places on earth, with very little vegetation and temperatures that can reach 120° F degrees.
The Afar people seem to have appeared from nowhere. They are a sort of miracle: they have kept a strong identity without having a testimony to their story. They are nomads struggling with the hostility of both climate and land. They have gained, in time, a good reputation as warriors. They have adapted to survive in a harsh and impossible land.
