Alexander Calder was drawn to forms and unexpected juxtapositions he found in nature and created abstract compositions that activated the surrounding space, as seen with his "Red Lily Pads" (1956). Calder also had a degree in engineering, and made innovative sculptures in which balanced forms move, frequently dependent only on air currents. ?
