Photo by @renan_ozturk // This man, Winfred Rembert, was violently attacked and hung by a rope in the 1960's, one of the only currently living survivors of a lynching in America. 4,000 African Americans were killed in similar acts of racial terrorism during that era after the emancipation of slavery and through Jim Crow. ~

Counterintuitively, he is not the hardened man he looks in this picture. At his core he full of forgiveness, sharing his story through his hand nailed leather murals. ~ "There ain't a person in the world who has reason more than I do to hate. I got a reason to hate. But guess what... there ain't a prejudice bone in my body. I wanna live, and I wanna let live." -Winfred Rembert ~

Part of the #AshesToAshesFilm project that @taylorfreesolo, her father @todd.rees and myself have been directing and producing this past year. The film is about Winfred and Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker, two individuals deeply affected by racism in America that are using art to heal.
