A female leatherback turtle crawls back to the sea after nesting - under the Caribbean moonlight - on the island of St. Croix. Researchers are uncertain as to exactly how old leatherbacks must be in order to begin mating, though most estimates state that the turtles must be between 20 and 30 years old.
The female crawls ashore typically after dark, digs her nest and lays a clutch of eggs. This picture was made at 2am, with a long exposure under a nearly full moon.

Leatherbacks are the largest, widest-ranging and deepest diving of all sea turtle species. Their lineage dates back more than 100 million years.
