This #FossilFriday update has an air of extinction—you only have until January 22 to visit the five giant fossils that have been displayed with the Titanosaur before they head back to Argentina, where the amazing sauropod was discovered.
Seen here is the Titanosaur’s femur (thigh bone). It is 8 feet long. Scientists used the relationship between the circumference of the femur and humerus (upper arm bone) to estimate the animal’s weight at around 70 tons.
In February, the Titanosaur will be joined by some new sauropod fossils, including a pelvis of the Diplodocus longus—part of the very first dinosaur fossil collected by the Museum—which will be on view with some never-before-displayed specimens from the Museum’s collection.
