This is a statue of Thomas Jefferson in the African American History Museum. What they taught us about him growing up was that he was a founding father of America and principal author of the Declaration of Independence. What they didn't tell us was that he owned 609 slaves. Each one of his slaves was represented by one of the bricks in the back ground of this picture. Each brick had the name of one of his slaves on it. He believed that their labor and service provided him personal liberty and wealth. If you didn't know, 12 of the first 18 presidents had slaves. The Declaration of Independence did not extend "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" to all Americans, undermining the ideal that "all men are created equal". No matter where you come from, and no matter what you look like we are all equal individuals!!!! When we all pass on we can't take anything material with us but you can take a bad reputation or bad legacy with you. It's your choice!!! #carpediem #NMAAHC
