フィラデルフィア美術館のインスタグラム(philamuseum) - 12月27日 00時00分

Today is the first day of this week-long African American tradition that celebrates family, community, and culture. The name of this celebration derives from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning "first fruits" in Swahili. An important symbol of this holiday is the mkeka, which is decorative mat on which other ceremonial symbols are placed. We’ve noticed that many of the mkekas used in #Kwanzaa ceremonies look strikingly similar to some of the textiles currently on display in “Threads of Tradition.” Take time this holiday season to explore these fabrics before the exhibition closes in January. Heri za Kwanzaa (Happy Kwanzaa)!
