A big year for both, as the national parks celebrated their 100th anniversary and President Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act into law, which named the bison the official mammal of the United States. North America used to be teeming with bison. But in one century, their numbers in the wild fell from tens of millions to a few dozen in a tragic chapter of American history.
