Photo by @jenniferhayesig. Making spirits Bright. Sunrise on the sea ice in Canada's Gulf of St Lawrence. A harp seal pup called a white-coat waits patiently for its mom to return. Pups are born on the ice and nursed for 12 to 15 days before she abandons them to mate and migrate. The mothers ultra rich milk allows the pups to gain 4 to 6 pounds a day creating fat reserves that will sustain them until hunger forces them into the water to learn how to swim and eat. Life in the ice is hard and these vulnerable pups face weak ice and extreme mortality in a warming sea. Harp seals have become the Face of Climate Change for us and we return to the seals each year that the ice conditions allow. We look forward to continue to explore their life in a changing sea in 2017.
